JOHN B. KEANE - renowned playright, essayist, poet and songwriter was born in Listowel, Co .Kerry in July 1928. Educated at St. Michael's College, Listowel, he worked as an apprentice pharmacist before following the emigrant's path to England where he was in turn a corporation street sweeper, barman and furnace operator. He returned to Ireland in 1953 and worked as a pharmacist's assistant until 1955 when he bought a 'pub' in Listowel (which he still runs with his wife Mary).
